China Brotsky is a co-founder of Environmentalists Against War, Director of Special Projects for the Tides Foundation and Tides Center, and Executive Director of the Groundspring.org website created by Drummond Pike to facilitate online charitable contributions to leftwing causes.

Brotsky is a Board of Directors member of CorpWatch (a project of the Tides Center), which seeks to investigate and expose “corporate violations of human rights, environmental crimes, fraud and corruption around the world,” and to foster “global justice, independent media activism and democratic control over corporations.” In 2002 and 2003, CorpWatch did an investigative study accusing corporations such as Halliburton of unethically gaining windfall profits from the War on Terror. Corpwatch also led two investigative teams into Iraq to examine the role played by corporations in reconstruction efforts; video footage of these trips was provided to Michael Moore for use in his film Fahrenheit 9-11. In recent years, Corpwatch has collaborated on various projects with Food First and the Sierra Club.

Brotsky also sits on the Board of Directors of the Global Greengrants Fund (GGF), a grant-making organization that believes “grassroots groups are a key to solving the intractable problems of poverty, powerlessness and environmental destruction.” GGF works closely with such organizations as Earth Island Institute, Friends of the Earth, and the Rainforest Action Network. One of its more notable fundees is GrantMakers Without Borders.

Brotsky was formerly an official with the Thoreau Center for Sustainability, a "Multi-tenant Nonprofit Center" that serves as the home of the Tides Center, the Tides Foundation, Environmental Media Services, the United Religions Initiative, and the International Forum on Globalization.

Brotsky, who received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Golden Gate University, worked for six years as a public accountant and as Deputy Director of Finance and Administration at the Exploratorium Science Museum.
