  • Executive Director of the California Women’s Law Center

Marjorie R. Sims is a founder and board member of Women’s Policy, Inc. (WPI), which states that it “champions the interests of women throughout the [United states] on the most significant social, economic, and health issues across the public policy spectrum.” WPI describes itself as a “nonprofit, nonpartisan organization whose sole focus is to help ensure that the most informed decisions on key women’s issues are made by policymakers at the Federal, state, and local levels. Audiences include elected officials, regulators, women’s groups, labor groups, academia, the business community, the media, and the general public.” To this end, WPI produces legislative policy analyses, impact assessments, issue summaries, and educational briefings.

Though it claims to be nonpartisan, WPI identifies a substantial number of politically motivated, almost exclusively leftwing activist groups and unions as its affiliate organizations, and provides links to these organizations on its website.

Sims, who earned her Master of Arts degree in Governmental Policy from California State University, began her career in public policy as a Congressional Black Caucus Fellow in the office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC); she thereafter served as a senior legislative assistant for the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues. Sims worked as a policy analyst for the International Center for Research on Women, and is currently the executive director of the California Women’s Law Center (CWLC), a Los Angeles-based organization ostensibly dedicated to advancing the civil rights of women and girls. CWLC supports women’s right to taxpayer-funded abortion-on-demand, including the practice commonly known as partial-birth abortion. “The rapid expansion of religious health systems is having grave consequences for women’s health and reproductive rights,” says CWLC. The California Women’s Law Center also advocates sex-based preferences for women in employment and academia; it derives its policy recommendations from the planted axiom that “[i]n the marketplace, women’s and girls’ labor and images are misused for profit, which greatly undermines the economic, social, and political advancement of women globally. Both the legal system and media are slow to respond to these pervasive labor and marketing abuses that disproportionately affect women and girls. As such, CWLC’s goal is to reduce the economic and social abuse of women and girls.” CWLC was also in the vanguard of the politically motivated campaign to demonize Arnold Schwarzenegger during his 2003 gubernatoral bid in California.

Sims has also been a board member of the Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies; the Legal Aid Association of California; and the Project on Government Oversight. Moreover, she served as a member of the Los Angeles City Task Force for the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
