  • Terrorist recruiter and organizer

Born in 1970, Senior al Qaeda representative Umar Faruq was linked to the 2002 Bali terrorist bombings that killed 202 people. Faruq worked closely with Yassin Sywal, the son-in-law of Abdullah Sungkar, who founded the radical Islamist militant group Jemaah Islamiyah (which means “Islamic Group” in Indonesian). Sywal assisted Faruq in recruiting men, obtaining weapons, and selecting assassination targets that included top political leaders like Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri.

The U.S. captured Faruq in May 2002, but two months later he escaped from the high-security Bagram Air Base prison in Afghanistan.
