In January 2002, a national anti-Iraq War newspaper called War Times was established by a group of San Francisco leftists affiliated with such organizations as STORM, the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, and the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. Among the more prominent founders of the publication was Van Jones. Key individual and organizational endorsers of War Times included Phyllis Bennis, Paul Buhle, Noam Chomsky, Kathleen Cleaver, Roxanne Dunbar-OrtizWinona LaDuke, Frances Fox Piven, Tim Wise, Howard Zinn, the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee's San Francisco chapter, the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, and Students for Justice in Palestine.
